Gear Tables and Cadence

1) Gear Table

For the gear table I have chosen the ring and cog sizes most commonly used in cyclotouring.

2) Cadence Table

The cadence is based upon the number of revs per minute.
For a cyclotourist the cadence is approximately 80 revs per minute on a good flat road without any wind.
The following table gives a comparison of the different rates of cadence used by different types of riders.

Gear Table

     1) In Britain cycle gearing is commonly expressed as a number of inches, but in France and Europe generally they describe gearing in terms of the distance travelled per turn of the pedals, which is called the gear 'development' and is measured in meters. As tyre sizes are nominally sized, the circumference would need to be measured by marking and rolling the wheel, or calculated. As a result, the tendency is to state merely the size of the chainwheel and cog in the format 42 x 20.
     2) This gear table is only applicable for 700 wheels (circumference of 2.10 m. ). For 650 wheels reduce the gear size by 6%.

Cadence Table

The following table is for a cyclotourist having a cadence of 80 rpm, with 23 mm. tyres on 700 wheels, and using the most common gear sizes.

Using this table, memorise the speed corresponding to gear sizes used. For example : 40/14 = 29 km/h, which when used with a computer allows you to know the cadence and increase your speed. If you are pedalling too slowly, you should use a smaller gear or pedal faster. If you are pedalling too quickly, use a higher gear.
